Travel Guide

Llaqta or Inka City of Machu Picchu

The Inca city of Machupicchu represents a masterpiece of art, architecture, and engineering in perfect harmony with nature and is the most important legacy of the Inca civilization to humanity.

Was planned and built around 1400 AD. The work required the participation of specialists in architecture, engineering, and astronomy, in addition to a large amount of labor. More than 50% of the effort required in its construction was spent on the preparation of the land, the foundations, and the drainage system. Its construction responded to the Inka State’s need for an administrative, political, religious, military, and astronomic center within a sacred space considered the nexus between the Andes and the Rainforest.

It was gradually abandoned during the second half of the 16th century by the Spanish invasion. However, it was never abandoned or lost in its entirety, as it was visited and inhabited occasionally and was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. In 1983, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site, in 2007 it was chosen as one of the seven wonders of the world and in the last 4 consecutive years, it was awarded as the Best Tourist Attraction in South America by the World Travel Awards.
