Travel Guide
Ausangate Mountain, The Apu Ausangate, Ausangate snow-capped mountain
The Ausangate Mountain. It is the highest mountain in the eastern Andes, in a stretch called Vilcabamba mountain range corresponding to the Cusco region and the fifth highest in Peru. Its maximum altitude is 6385 meters above sea level and is located about 100 kilometers southeast of the Cusco city. The Ausangate glacier mountain is the main supplier of fresh water to the Vilcanota and other rivers. With global warming, its perpetual ice is melting, originating innumerable small and beautiful lagoons, wetlands full of Andean biodiversity and is exposing oxides of different minerals that form amazing colorful mountains.
In Andean mythology. The Apu Ausangate (Apu = God or supreme spirit) is a great sacred spirit that represents the male energy that fertilizes the mother earth, Pachamama, with its waters.
Around the Ausangate snow-capped mountain there are many Quechua-speaking high Andean communities where ancestral customs and traditions are still practiced. For them the Apu Ausangate is a tutelary God, protector and highly respected for his greatness and magnificence.
The 3 Day Ausangate and rainbow mountain trek tour is one of the best trekking alternatives in Cusco region, because you will fully enjoy the scenic beauty, see high Andean animals in their natural habitat and have the opportunity to meet the Inca descendants.
