The Last Qeswachaka Suspension Inca Bridge Tour

It is the only one left in Peru and is a great cultural heritage of our ancestors. Qeswa = plant fiber braid and Chaka = bridge which means plant fiber bridge.

During the Inca empire time, there were more than 40 thousand kilometers of trails, and the main one was called Qhapaq Ñan (path of the nobility). These allowed the best administration of the empire and the tunnels and bridges that were necessary to cross the rugged geography of the Andes were built, especially hanging bridges made of vegetable fibers to cross rivers.

Currently, there is a single bridge that has been renewed annually for more than 500 years; using rituals and complex ancestral knowledge. The restoration (June 1 to 5) is carried out by the 4 communities that are located around the Q’eswachaka bridge: Huinchiri, Chaupibanda, Choccayhua, and Ccollana Quehue, all of them belonging to the province of Canas, Cusco.

The Qeswachaka Suspension Inca Bridge is located over the Apurímac River at 3700 meters / 12,139 feet, 3 hours from the city of Cusco, it is 30 meters long and 1.20 meters wide. In 2013 it was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
