The Inca Trail is one of the most popular treks in the world and therefore, availability is limited. If you are planning to hike the Inca Trail, it is important that you reserve your ticket well in advance. The availability of the Inca Trail depends on several factors, such as the time of year, the number of people in your group and the number of spaces regulated by the Peruvian government.
Only 500 permits are issued per day for Inca Trail treks in 2023; Inca Trail permits are also required for your travel team, such as porters, cooks and guides; therefore, booking the Inca Trail in advance is essential. There is no set amount of time in advance that you must take into account to book and guarantee an Inca Trail entrance ticket to Machu Picchu.
The best time to hike the Inca Trail is the dry season, which runs from May to September. It is also the busiest time of the year, so it is important to book your trip as far in advance as possible.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, normal ticket availability on the Inca Trail was 500, this included guides, cooks and porters. Now that Covid-19 stopped tourism and is slowly getting back to normal; only 250 members can enter per day as of September 2021. This is for the 4-day Inca Trail trek.
Now as for the 2-day Inca Trail trek, availability is down to only 120 permits from what was 250 in normal times.
As a very popular trekking route to Machu Picchu; wonder of the world, the 4-day Inca Trail permits sell out quickly. Our advice would be to book at least 06 months in advance or slightly more.
And as for the 2-day Inca Trail trek, it is a bit easier to find permits and could be up to 2 weeks in advance.
Unfortunately, there is no easy way around this; and this can be disappointing for many travelers. Just planning well in advance is the solution. But still, you have some other trekking options such as the Lares to Machu Picchu hike or the Inca Quarry to Machu Picchu hike; while these are not the Inca Trail nor can they compare, but see what other people are saying about it on Trip Advisor you might find interesting.
