Friendly tourism on the Inca Trail
Due to the large number of tourists visiting The Inca Trail, Machu Picchu (the Inca city) and Machu Picchu town (better known as Aguas Calientes), more than half a million tons of solid waste are generated annually. This is according to the annual report of the local government of Machu Picchu town and the railway company Peru Rail, which is in charge of transporting all solid waste from Machu Picchu to Cusco. In this regard, the competent Peruvian state entity, the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP), which is a technical agency of the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment, in coordination with the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, tour operators, and the general population, has been carrying out important public management actions in response to the aforementioned situation, such as ongoing awareness campaigns on the collection and cleaning of solid waste, protection of biodiversity, and cultural heritage.
In light of this situation, Machupicchu Andes Tours – Matours is proud to be part of the promotion of environmentally friendly tourism on the Inca Trail network within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu – Cusco, completely eliminating single-use plastics and solid waste. We have carried out various environmental and cultural awareness actions, focused on the use of tourist resources within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, such as the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and other alternative tourist circuits in Cusco.
In this way, by carrying out tourism operations that are respectful of the environment and culture, we believe that our tourism resources, such as the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, and other alternative circuits, will endure for a long time for the full enjoyment of future generations.
